Book Club 6-11
Hello fellow readers,
Our discussion around Trumpism and the interaction of church leadership, politics and congregations with the history and perspective provided in Tim Alberta’s book has me still thinking tonight. I hope you enjoyed the robust discussion as much as I did.
Other items of interest on the board were:
“Good Luck and Good Night” a 2005 movie available to rent on Prime for $1.74
Heather Cox Richardson’s new history shorts, “Journey to Democracy” on YouTube
Drew Farmer’s Sunday night videos on Facebook
Matt Jarvis’s "EPuerto” an local newsletter sent out through e-mail (Subscribe here)
“What’s Going on Around Here,” CoosCalendar.com by Gail Ebert
And other books that people brought in and that many of us took notes on were:
“One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This” by Omar El Akkad
“Buckley: The Life and the Revolution That Changed America” by Sam Tanenhaus
“Democracy May Not Exist, but We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone,” by Astra Taylor
“Shadow Network … Media, Money, and the Secret Hub of the Radical Right” by Anne Nelson
Also mentioned in discussion were: Hillbilly Elegy, Demon Copperhead, and Nora mentioned a series of mysteries that shed light on Appalachia and its culture.
Our next book is the Federalist Papers (free PDF). No matter the editor, this is quite a bit of reading if it is not too abridged, and I am wondering if we want to break our time with these papers to two months. Please let me know if you would prefer to do this, and I will send a second email out in a week if this is the choice for many of you.
There are many collections and editions of The Federalist Papers, so I thought I would share the one I chose. I use Better World Books online after sending groups of students here to find used textbooks for years. I knew they would have many copies of any given edition of the papers. Here is the one I purchased. We can deal with other editions, just thought I would share that this is available. My order came to a bit over $7 after shipping.
Have a good month, and we’ll see you at the next bookclub on July 9th with a change of venue. We will be at the Dems office on Virginia in North Bend.
