Book Club 8-13

Hello Fellow readers,

Thanks for the lively, informative and so very friendly discussion of ideas and readings yesterday.  For those who did not attend, over half of our time was spent on our local response to federal issues such as ICE raids. It was so good to find that the Federalist Papers themselves focused on a Constitution that allows citizens to be present and effective in caring for themselves and all others in our nation. And yet the idea that it is not just the laws, but perhaps more importantly the morality of the citizenry, is clearly presented in these papers as is the idea that we are dealing with human nature.  There are no perfect people, thus we need government. So much rationale for the ways our branches of government are set up.

Thanks too for the wonderful summer strawberries with cookies and cream, Jill!  We can all feel free to bring in snacks, and let’s see how that goes.  No push to do so, as I was one of those whose schedule was too full to do that yesterday.  I have plans for the September meeting though!

This next month we will be completing The Federalist Papers with a focus on both the Constitution and the Articles of Confederation that came before these.  For future months reading we have three books on the table so far:

Nora brought in:

“Waging a Good War,” by Thomas E. Rick and Strongmen https://a.co/d/9aeo8ep

and “Strongmen” by Ruth Ben-Ghait https://a.co/d/4Np53C6

Donna sent information about “Coming to America” by Roger Daniels https://a.co/d/1IOOJfB

Bring in others, and lets make some choices at the next meeting at the Coos Bay Library on September 10 from 3 to 4:30

I did not take a photo of the board before leaving the meeting, but I do remember writing a recommendations for Rachel Maddow’s “Prequel” podcast on the board.

Hope you are all enjoying these summer days,

Charlotte
